She was honored for her work to &#8220;make optical biosensors smaller, more versatile and more sophisticated.&#8221;\u00a0Ligler majored in biology and chemistry at Furman, and received D.Phil. and D.Sc. degrees from Oxford University. She holds 29 U.S. patents, and is currently on the faculty at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.<\/p>\n<p>Ligler is the second Furman graduate to be inducted into the Hall.
