Shi writes about the virtues of simplicity, which \u201cdemands neither an end to economic growth nor a vow of personal poverty. A simpler life\u2019s basic requirement is not a rural homestead or a monastic regimen, for simplicity is fundamentally a state of mind rather than a particular standard of living.\u201d Shi, a 1973 Furman graduate and author of <em>The Simple Life: Plain Living and High Thinking in America Culture<\/em>, served as Furman\u2019s president from 1994 to 2010. \u00a0He is also a member of Furman&#8217;s history\u00a0faculty.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In an essay for Sapiens, former Furman president David E.
