Crews have been working to clear snow from the sidewalks and roads, and university officials have confirmed it\u2019s safe to move around campus. The roadways around the university, however, can still be hazardous and visitors are advised to exercise caution when driving to Furman.<\/p>\n<p>Campus housing will open at 2 p.m. Saturday.\u00a0 Returning students should check in with the RA office in their building.\u00a0 While students are cleared to move in, university officials are recommending that, if possible, students wait until Sunday to return when conditions are likely to have improved.\u00a0 More updates to follow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>*** Update\u2026Saturday, Jan. 7, 8:30 a.m<\/strong>.\u00a0 Because of inclement weather in the area, the Furman University campus is closed until at least noon today.\u00a0 All sorority activities have been cancelled, and specific questions about those activities should be directed to Natalie Brewster at <a href=\"mailto:natalie.brewster@furman.edu\">natalie.brewster@furman.edu<\/a>. The Physical Activities Center is open today from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.\u00a0 The Furman women&#8217;s basketball game against Western Carolina at 2 p.m. in Timmons Arena will take place as scheduled. \u00a0University officials will continue to monitor the situation on campus and provide regular updates throughout the weekend on Furman\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Posted Jan. 6, 12:15 p.m.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Because an impending winter storm could affect Furman University\u2019s normal operating schedule, especially as students prepare to return to campus over the weekend for the start of the spring semester, the university will provide regular updates on its website over the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>A winter storm warning is in effect for the Greenville area from 7 p.m. Friday night to 1 p.m. Saturday.\u00a0 Forecasters are calling for 4 to 7 inches of snow and temperatures in the mid-30s on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.<\/p>\n<p>While the university housing is currently scheduled to open at 2 p.m. on Saturday and the first meal at the Dining Hall will be an 11 a.m. brunch on Sunday, those schedules may be altered if closings are required.\u00a0 At this time, university officials are recommending that students delay returning to campus until Sunday at the earliest.\u00a0 The university will know more about its operating schedule this weekend and will provide updates accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe safety of our students is our primary concern, and we encourage them not to be in a rush to get back to campus,\u201d said George Shields, Furman\u2019s Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.\u00a0 \u201cWe will continue to monitor the situation and provide regular updates on the website.\u00a0 If the university should be forced to close at any time, faculty, staff and students will be notified via texts and emails.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More specific information regarding campus housing is available by calling the Housing office at 864-294-2092.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>*** Update\u2026Sunday, Jan. 8, 8:05 p.m. Furman University will operate on its normal schedule Monday, Jan.\u00a0 9, and the first day of classes will meet as scheduled. *** Update\u2026Sunday, Jan.
