Rita Allison<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Honorable Rita Allison (R-District 36) will be awarded the David H. Wilkins Award for Excellence in Legislative Leadership; and Hayne Hipp, former CEO of The Liberty Corporation and founder of the Liberty Fellows, will receive the David H. Wilkins Award for Excellence in Civic Leadership.<\/p>\n<p>The awards dinner will take place at Columbia\u2019s Metropolitan Convention Center Tuesday, Jan. 10, the first night of the 2017 legislative session.<\/p>\n<p>A strong, long-time advocate for education improvement in South Carolina, Representative Allison has worked tirelessly for the children of South Carolina and has set aside partisanship to bring people together to tackle important education issues.\u00a0 Nominated for the award by fellow legislators, she is described as open-minded, smart, and easy to work with.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27978\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27978\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-27978 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2022\/08\/HayneHipp2008-400-wide.jpg\" alt=\"Hayne Hipp\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 200px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 200\/300;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27978\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hayne Hipp<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Hayne Hipp\u2019s civic and community leadership is far-reaching, but no greater impact has been made in the community than through his vision and creation of the Liberty Fellowship, an incubator for exemplary leadership in South Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHayne consistently asks \u2018why not?\u2019 as he challenges the status quo in South Carolina.\u00a0 He leads wholeheartedly and generously, focusing on what is best for South Carolina,\u201d said Luanne Runge, the current president and CEO of Liberty Fellowship.<\/p>\n<p>The annual ceremony honors David Wilkins, who served as speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives and as U.S. Ambassador to Canada.\u00a0 Wilkins will co-host the event with former U.S. Secretary of Education and former two-term Governor of South Carolina Dick Riley and\u00a0Furman President Elizabeth Davis.<\/p>\n<p>A reception for all registered attendees will begin at 6 p.m., Jan. 10, and the dinner and awards presentation begins at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are $125 each and can be purchased by calling 864-235-8330 or visiting the Riley Institute <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/riley.furman.edu\/riley\/programs\/wilkins-leadership-awards\/wilkins-legislative-and-civic-awards-dinner-2017\">website.<\/a><\/strong> Sponsorships are available.<\/p>\n<p>Furman\u2019s Richard W.
