{"id":6218,"date":"2016-11-01T14:25:37","date_gmt":"2016-11-01T14:25:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2016\/11\/07\/come-home-to-furman\/"},"modified":"2022-09-07T14:54:00","modified_gmt":"2022-09-07T18:54:00","slug":"come-home-to-furman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/come-home-to-furman\/","title":{"rendered":"Come home to Furman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s time to reconnect\u2014to professors, to roommates, to campus and even to Greenville itself, which may be a far cry from what it was the last time you saw it.<\/p>\n<p>Furman University\u2019s Homecoming 2016 is about football and festivities, but at the end of the day, it\u2019s about people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurman is ultimately about relationships,\u201d said Leo Fackler \u201903, associate director of alumni and parent engagement. \u201cThat\u2019s what makes it a unique place, a special place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, yes, there is a football game. And this year\u2019s matchup, against long-time rival Wofford, is not to be missed. But there is so much more.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27922\" style=\"width: 452px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27922\" class=\"wp-image-27922 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2022\/08\/22231084220_47defdfa2e_c.jpg\" alt=\"Float building on the Mall\" width=\"442\" height=\"418\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 442px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 442\/418;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27922\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Float building on the Mall<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Football \u201cis part of the event, it\u2019s not the reason for the event,\u201d said Mike Wilson \u201988, executive director of alumni and parent engagement. \u201cThey\u2019re coming back to reunite and reconnect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many of this year\u2019s key campus events will be right on the mall, \u201cwhich is iconic to most students and most alums,\u201d Wilson said.<\/p>\n<p>Rows of tents will form an alumni village, where all the 2016 reunions will be represented. Beyond those tents will be another array for the various departments. Alumni won\u2019t have to wander through buildings, looking for an office they vaguely remember. They can simply move along the mall, easily reconnecting with faces from the past.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re aligning all the energy out on the mall,\u201d said Sarrin Garfield \u201903, assistant director of alumni and parent engagement.<\/p>\n<p>In all, 13 classes hold reunions each year. The marquee events are for the 5-, 10-, 25- and 50-year reunions.<\/p>\n<p>The major homecoming events are for everyone, but there are smaller, specialized opportunities to check in on your academic department, your sports team, your affinity group, your fraternity, or sorority\u2014you name it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27923\" style=\"width: 426px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27923\" class=\"wp-image-27923 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2022\/08\/22481036832_ae1a968661_b.jpg\" alt=\"The Paladins take on Wofford, Saturday, 1:30 p.m. in Paladin Stadium\" width=\"416\" height=\"354\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 416px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 416\/354;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27923\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Paladins take on Wofford, Saturday, 1:30 p.m. in Paladin Stadium<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For example, artists and art lovers can attend a reception to celebrate the debut of Word and Image, a new exhibition featuring original works by students, alumni, instructors, and staff of Undergraduate Evening Studies.<\/p>\n<p>Or former baseball players can meet the team\u2019s new head coach and take part in an alumni game.<\/p>\n<p>The university is taking the celebration into downtown Greenville as well. This year\u2019s schedule includes a revival of official after-football festivities. Furman on Main will include a band, bar, food\u2014 all in a section of downtown that will be decked in purple from fountains to grass to lights.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the weekend, no one should be able to say, There was nothing for me. An event like homecoming is unique in that it\u2019s not targeted to an audience of any particular age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re after everybody from 22 to 92,\u201d Wilson said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Connections<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All over campus and throughout the community, Furman Homecoming 2016 offers opportunities to gather\u00a0with friends around the activities you love. If it\u2019s been a while since you\u2019ve been back, you\u2019re in for a surprise when you arrive in downtown Greenville. Below, a few highlights of the weekend on campus and in the community. The group sang its first-ever song to a small Furman audience in 1996. Since then, the Boys have toured the Southeast, performing for audiences including Gov. Nikki Haley, the Biltmore Estate, the annual Bell Tower Ball, and many others. Location: Furman Mall. (Rain location: Younts Conference Center.) The concert concludes with Shostakovich\u2019s Tenth Symphony\u2014written after Stalin\u2019s death to depict the suffering and struggles of the Russian people under Stalin\u2019s regime and culminating in the unrestrained joy of liberation in the victorious last movement.
