{"id":4639,"date":"2016-07-13T15:52:01","date_gmt":"2016-07-13T19:52:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2016\/07\/20\/furman-students-alums-join-musical-theatre-for-summer-productions\/"},"modified":"2022-11-06T20:47:44","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T01:47:44","slug":"furman-students-alums-join-musical-theatre-for-summer-productions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/furman-students-alums-join-musical-theatre-for-summer-productions\/","title":{"rendered":"Furman Students, Alums Join Musical Theatre for Summer Productions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Greenville\u2019s GLOW Lyric Theatre, South Carolina\u2019s only professional opera, operetta and musical theatre company, is gearing up for a Furman-filled July.<\/p>\n<p>The 2016 season of Gounod\u2019s deeply romantic opera, \u201cRomeo et Juliette\u201d and the fiery classic musical \u201cWest Side Story,\u201d will be presented at Furman\u2019s McAlister Auditorium from July 27-31. A special one night only performance called Summer Stars Cabaret will be at the intimate Furman Playhouse Theatre on July 28.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25560\" style=\"width: 242px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25560\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-25560 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2022\/08\/glow-poster-medium.jpg\" alt=\"Furman students and alums will be featured in GLOW's summer productions.\" width=\"232\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 232px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 232\/300;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25560\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Furman students and alums are\u00a0featured in GLOW&#8217;s summer productions.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Not only is GLOW performing on Furman\u2019s campus, but the company has also established an official relationship with the university\u2019s Department of Music, wherein GLOW provides professional opportunities for Furman student musicians during the summer months.<\/p>\n<p>Music students selected for this opportunity include Jessie Barnett (B.M. \u201916), who will perform the role of Stephano in Romeo et Juliette, and James Douglas (B.M. \u201917), who will serve as Assistant Director for both productions. Additionally, GLOW has hired seven current and former Furman students to be a part of the season, both onstage and off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the largest group we have ever hired from a single university\u201d says Jenna Tamisiea, GLOW\u2019s Artistic Director.\u00a0 \u201cWith our recent move to McAlister, we want to involve past and present FU students, and for GLOW to start becoming a part of the Furman family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furman alum Katherine Sandoval Taylor (B.M. \u201904) will take to the stage as Maria in West Side Story. Alum Ben Moore (B.M. \u201908) and current theatre major Anne Morgan perform the roles of Big Deal and Velma in West Side Story, with Moore also singing Mercutio in Romeo et Juliette.\u00a0 Morgan will also be featured in the Summer Stars Cabaret on July 28.\u00a0Furman alum Hailey Darnell \u201911 serves as season accompanist, and plays piano in the pit for both shows.<\/p>\n<p>Furman students are prominent in the off-stage roles as well. Maranda Debusk (B.A. Theatre \u201913) is Lighting Designer for both of the productions. Dakota Adams (Theatre \u201817) and Courtney Dorn (Theatre \u201818) are serving as Stage Manager and Assistant Stage Manager, respectively.\u00a0 Sophomore theatre major Derek Leonard joins GLOW as a carpenter.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the students have a long history with GLOW.\u00a0 Adams and Dorn began as volunteer production assistants and worked their way up to management positions. Debusk was an assistant lighting designer for three seasons before now taking over as the season lighting designer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe pride ourselves on being a company where pre-professionals can learn, and eventually become the type of professionals who change the world of theatre.\u201d Tamisiea says.\u00a0 \u201cFurman University obviously provides a fabulous arts education, and we at GLOW are certainly reaping the rewards!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GLOW Lyric Theatre is a professional vocal arts company producing opera, operetta and musical theatre.
