{"id":4612,"date":"2016-06-10T19:16:38","date_gmt":"2016-06-10T23:16:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2016\/06\/24\/it-was-a-very-good-year\/"},"modified":"2022-11-06T21:09:12","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T02:09:12","slug":"it-was-a-very-good-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/it-was-a-very-good-year\/","title":{"rendered":"It Was a Very Good Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Furman University&#8217;s 2015-16 athletic year proved to be its best in over a decade as evidenced by the school&#8217;s 92nd place finish among 294 NCAA Division I qualifying schools in <a href=\"http:\/\/grfx.cstv.com\/photos\/schools\/nacda\/sports\/directorscup\/auto_pdf\/2015-16\/misc_non_event\/DIJune14Standings.pdf\">Learfield Sports&#8217; Director&#8217;s Cup competition [PDF]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 92nd place finish\u2014the highest of any SoCon school\u2014is Furman&#8217;s best since an 88th place finish in 2004-05 and fourth Top 100 performance in the competition&#8217;s 22-year history.<br \/>\nThe 197 points is the program&#8217;s second highest tally behind the 208 points registered during the 2001-02 school year. Finishes by other schools include James Madison (94th), William &amp; Mary (95th), Coastal Carolina (127th), Tulane (135th), Butler (146th), Richmond (166th), Colgate (194th), College of Charleston (207th), and Elon (220th),<\/p>\n<p>Given annually since 1994 to the school with the most successful, broad-based athletics program based on national finishes in both men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s sports, the Learfield Directors&#8217; Cup was originally developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. In 1995 it was expanded to include Division II, III, and the NAIA and, in 2011-12, expanded to include junior\/community colleges.<\/p>\n<p>Furman, which won the 2015-16 Germann Cup (women) and finished second in the Commissioner&#8217;s Cup (men) in Southern Conference all-sports competitions, captured a SoCon leading seven league championships and qualified five teams for NCAA Tournament competition over the past year. In addition, individuals representing men&#8217;s cross country, women&#8217;s outdoor track, and men&#8217;s outdoor track also participated in NCAA Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Furman men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s soccer, volleyball, men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s cross country, and women&#8217;s golf teams won SoCon Tournament championships, and women&#8217;s tennis claimed a league regular season title.<\/p>\n<p>Paladins athletics produced four All-Americans, eight SoCon Players of the Year, five SoCon Coaches of the Year, four league freshmen of the year in 2015-16, and 91 all-conference performers.
