{"id":4553,"date":"2016-06-01T19:46:36","date_gmt":"2016-06-01T23:46:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2016\/06\/02\/french-citizen-of-the-month\/"},"modified":"2022-11-06T20:49:32","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T01:49:32","slug":"french-citizen-of-the-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/french-citizen-of-the-month\/","title":{"rendered":"French Citizen of the Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Marianne Bessy, an associate professor of French in the Modern Languages and Literatures department at Furman, has been selected as the &#8220;Honored French Citizen&#8221; of the month by the French Consulate in Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p>A native of Rennes, France, Bessy has taught at Furman since 2008.\u00a0 A feature story on the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.consulfrance-atlanta.org\/spip.php?article5138\">French Consulate<\/a><\/strong> website says that Bessy \u201censures that her students have an ample understanding of French culture, rather than simply knowledge of the language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even though Bessy never planned to teach French, she soon learned she loved it.\u00a0 \u201cTeaching,&#8221; she says, \u201cis a skill that must be cultivated, and I feel that I improve after each course I teach. There is never a moment of \u2018arriving\u2019 in my profession.
