Ahead of President Donald Trump’s campaign stop in the Upstate last week, WYFF News 4<\/a> turned to Furman University’s Danielle Vinson<\/a> for her take. Vinson, a Furman alum and professor of politics and international affairs,<\/a> said the visit was important to rally Republican support in a tight midterm race between Democrat Annie Andrews and Republican candidate Darline Graham.<\/p>\n

“I think they’re a bit worried<\/span><\/span> about republican turnout and<\/span><\/span> enthusiasm in this election,” Vinson said. “<\/span><\/span>The polls are suggesting that<\/span><\/span> it’s going to be a good year for<\/span><\/span> Democrats. T<\/span><\/span>hat can easily depress turnout<\/span><\/span> when those polls are that close. You want somebody who can<\/span> motivate the base, because in<\/span> South Carolina, that’s really a<\/span> key here.<\/span> If she (Graham) can motivate the base,<\/span> that gives her a built-in<\/span> advantage because it’s such a<\/span> red state. <\/span><\/span><\/span>So, he (Trump) is here to motivate the<\/span><\/span> base.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
