Furman students winning awards include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Julia Torres \u201929, First Place, Best Poster Presentation in STEM (the most competitive category), for \u201cThe Impact of Maternal Fat and Sugar Consumption on Offspring Neurochemistry and Feeding Decisions.\u201d Torres\u2019 faculty mentors are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/veronica-flores\/\">Veronica Flores<\/a>, associate professor of psychology and neuroscience, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/linnea-freeman\/\">Linnea Freeman<\/a>, associate professor of biology and neuroscience.<\/li>\n<li>Suraiya Toni \u201929, Second Place (tie), Best Poster Presentation in Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, for \u201cA Gamified Approach to Teaching African Politics.\u201d Her faculty mentor is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/buket-oztas\/\">Buket Oztas<\/a>, associate professor of politics and international affairs, and co-chair of Middle East and Islamic studies.<\/li>\n<li>Misbah Pathan \u201928, Second Place (tie), Best Oral Presentation in STEM, for \u201cGold Nanoparticle\u2013DNA\u2013Silver Nanocluster Catalyst: Synthesis and Results.\u201d Her faculty mentor is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/jeffrey-t-petty\/\">Jeffrey Petty<\/a>, professor of chemistry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Furman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/christopher-alvin\/\">Chris Alvin<\/a>, associate professor of computer science, and director of undergraduate research, served as a judge for the conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree of our six presenters earned awards, a strong showing for one of the forum\u2019s smaller delegations, which reflects the strength of their work and the dedication of their faculty mentors,&#8221; Alvin said. \u201cOur students did not simply present their projects. They answered questions as researchers, with a clear command of their methods and results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year, more than 100 students representing eight of the 11 SoCon member institutions participated.
