Furman University&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/danielle-vinson\/\">Danielle Vinson<\/a> &#8217;89, a professor of politics and international affairs, says candidates only need a laptop and a human to churn out content. But since there are currently no sweeping laws on the books governing the use of AI in campaigns, much of the policing of AI-generated messages is left to the media, politicians and voters they are trying to reach. \u201cWith the states leaving it wide open, we\u2019re really relying on candidates and voters and the public and the media to help mediate what is ethical and what is tolerable and what\u2019s not tolerable,\u201d Vinson said in an interview with CBS affiliates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.live5news.com\/2026\/09\/17\/ai-reshaping-political-campaigns-sc-weighs-whether-new-rules-are-needed\/\">WCSC<\/a> in Charleston and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtoc.com\/2026\/09\/17\/ai-reshapes-political-campaigns-south-carolina-weighs-whether-new-rules-are-needed\/\">WTOC<\/a> in Savannah.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With no laws governing the use of AI in political campaigns, Vinson says it&#8217;s up to the candidates, the media and the public to determine what is tolerable and what is not in political messaging.
