{"id":4305,"date":"2016-03-29T13:35:14","date_gmt":"2016-03-29T13:35:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2016\/04\/07\/storey-awarded-visiting-fellowship-at-princeton\/"},"modified":"2022-09-07T14:50:27","modified_gmt":"2022-09-07T18:50:27","slug":"storey-awarded-visiting-fellowship-at-princeton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/storey-awarded-visiting-fellowship-at-princeton\/","title":{"rendered":"Storey awarded Visiting Fellowship at Princeton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Furman University professor Benjamin Storey has received a one-year Visiting Fellowship with the Department of Politics at Princeton University for the 2016-2017 academic year.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Storey is an associate professor of political science and co-director of Furman\u2019s Tocqueville Program. His Fellowship at Princeton is sponsored by the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Storey will use his Fellowship to work on a book entitled <em>Know Thyself<\/em>.\u00a0 He says, \u201cSince Socrates made it his motto, the Delphic injunction to know thyself has been at the heart of the West\u2019s philosophic, literary and religious traditions. It is the most personal and necessary of inquiries; every college student encounters it in his or her efforts to decide what to major in, whom to date, or whether to attend graduate school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the same time, the serious seeker of self-knowledge must ask the most fundamental and enduring human questions\u2014questions about God, death, justice, love, the self, the soul, and much else. I cannot imagine anything more satisfying to think about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Storey\u2019s book project grew out of a First-Year Seminar course, also called \u201cKnow Thyself,\u201d which he has taught at Furman for the past five years. He developed the course with the support of a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities\u2019 \u201cEnduring Questions\u201d program.<\/p>\n<p>The James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions in the Department of Politics at Princeton is dedicated to exploring enduring questions of American constitutional law and Western political thought.<\/p>\n<p>Storey has taught in Furman\u2019s Department of Political Science for 11 years.
