The event is part of Furman\u2019s annual Church Music Conference, which meets Jan. 21-22.<\/p>\n<p>The recital is open to the public and is presented by the Furman Hartness Organ Series. Tickets, available in advance or at the door, are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for students. The event is free for Church Music Conference registrants.<\/p>\n<p>The recital, performed on Furman&#8217;s Hartness Organ (Opus 121 of C.B. Fisk Organ Builders) will feature works for solo organ by two Baroque composers (Nicolas de Grigny and J.S. Bach) and two contemporary composers (Swiss composer Carl R\u00fctti and Greenville&#8217;s own Robert J. Powell).<\/p>\n<p>Nationally-recognized <em>mezzo-soprano<\/em> and Furman alumna Elizabeth Bishop, a regular performer with the Metropolitan Opera, will join Tompkins for the French Romantic composer Louis Vierne&#8217;s song cycle \u201cLes Angelus.\u201d Tompkins will also premiere his own composition, a newly-published Concertato\/Anthem on the hymn, \u201cSongs of Thankfulness and Praise.\u201d Joining Tompkins for the piece will be the Furman Singers and brass quartet, who will perform under the direction of Dr. Hugh Ferguson Floyd.<\/p>\n<p>Tompkins, a member of the Furman music faculty since 1986, also serves as Organist of First Baptist Church, Greenville.
