{"id":41861,"date":"2026-04-10T14:35:50","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T18:35:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/?p=41861"},"modified":"2026-04-20T14:39:41","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T18:39:41","slug":"rainbow-bridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/rainbow-bridge\/","title":{"rendered":"Students to paint rainbow bridge memorial for Riley the dog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just this side of heaven, on Furman University\u2019s campus, is a place called Riley\u2019s Pet Rainbow Bridge.<\/p>\n<p>For more than a decade, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/rileys-love\/\">the radiant Riley<\/a> \u2013 part golden retriever, part Basset Hound \u2013 served as a friendly face for everyone on Furman\u2019s campus. Her humans, Dave and Kathy Knox, walked Riley on campus nearly every day. She became an unofficial mascot; a highlight for tour groups that had the luck to pass by her on a walk and a comfort to students homesick for their own furry friends. Photo courtesy of Dave Knox.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A group of students rallied to paint a memorial tribute to Riley on April 12: a rainbow bridge.<\/p>\n<p>Dave said he\u2019s been working to memorialize Riley for the better part of a year, inspired by the Rainbow Bridge memorial in <a href=\"https:\/\/lakelurefloweringbridge.org\/rainbow-bridge\">Lake Lure<\/a>, North Carolina. But his dream is to do more than pay tribute \u2013 he and Kathy want to pay it forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can do both: Memorialize Riley and give something back by letting her continue to do her therapy, even though she\u2019s no longer with us,\u201d Dave said.<\/p>\n<h2>Riley\u2019s love is still felt<\/h2>\n<p>For Abbey Vincent \u201927, a chemistry major from Germantown, Tennessee organizing student volunteers, Riley was an oasis when she came to campus. She wasn\u2019t the only one; students volunteered without hesitation to help paint the bridge, said Jessica Rosato, art department assistant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy team and I wanted to ensure that it would resonate not only with Dave and Kathy, but with everyone whose lives Riley brightened,\u201d Vincent said.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what inspired Dave to get this bridge on campus in the first place. He and Kathy saw countless students who shed tears after petting Riley and shared stories of being unable to make it home when their pets faced an emergency.
