Duke established The Duke Endowment in 1924. Furman has received a total of $161 million from the Endowment since that time.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The grant includes $22 million for the University\u2019s endowment to augment Furman\u2019s James B. Duke Scholarship program, which provides full-tuition scholarships to students who display \u201cexceptional academic achievement and distinctive personal accomplishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The remaining $300,000 is operational funding that will augment the University\u2019s ongoing initiatives to integrate the Duke Scholars\u2019 academic experiences with four years of individual mentoring and advising to prepare them for post-graduation opportunities ranging from careers and service work to graduate and professional education. These initiatives also include opportunities for summer research, internships and study away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been proud partners with The Duke Endowment for nearly a century, and we are grateful not only for this extraordinary gift but also for the Endowment\u2019s continuing confidence in Furman\u2019s direction going forward,\u201d said President Elizabeth Davis. \u201cIt\u2019s a strong signal to others who want to support excellence and the next generation of leaders, particularly at a time when access to higher education is more important than ever. Duke Library at Furman is named for Mr. Duke.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Wilhelmina Reuben-Cooke, the Trustee who chairs the Endowment\u2019s Committee on Educational Institutions, agreed. \u201cOur founder, James B. Duke, believed in the importance of education and its benefits for society,\u201d she said. \u201cThis scholarship is one way for Furman to offer opportunities for student scholars to learn, innovate and excel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe James B. Duke Scholarship Program reflects and extends the high value associated with Furman,\u201d said W. Michael Hendricks, the university\u2019s Vice President for Enrollment Management. \u201cThe scholarships are a beacon to our highest achieving students, young men and women selected for their stellar academic credentials and meaningful engagement beyond the classroom. They know Furman will be a place where they will flourish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Based in Charlotte, N.C., and established in 1924 by industrialist and philanthropist James B. Duke, The Duke Endowment is a private foundation that strengthens communities in North Carolina and South Carolina by nurturing children, promoting health, educating minds and enriching spirits. Since its founding, it has awarded more than $3 billion in grants. The Endowment shares a name with Duke University and Duke Energy, but all are separate organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Located in Greenville, S.C., Furman is one of the nation\u2019s leading private universities, offering residential undergraduate degree programs, graduate education and professional development, and enrichment programs for children and adults.<\/p>\n<p>The University is one of four educational institutions (and the only university in South Carolina) that receive annual financial support from the Endowment.\u00a0 The others are Davidson College, Duke University and Johnson C.
