Mentorship That Meets the Moment<\/strong><\/p>\nThe work pushed him into unfamiliar territory, especially when it came to academic writing.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe most challenging part was understanding that I have the necessary skillset to take on writing a manuscript,\u201d he said. \u201cThere were some days where I\u2019m like, I don\u2019t know where we\u2019re going.\u201d<\/p>\n
Criss met those moments with both structure and encouragement.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want people to have information and know how to act on it,\u201d she said. \u201cBut they have to show me they\u2019re willing to follow through. From there, I can say \u2018You\u2019re ready. Let\u2019s go.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
That balance between expectation and empowerment helped Abim-Karmon grow not just as a researcher, but as a thinker.<\/p>\n

Their work now comes full circle at Furman Engaged, a campus-wide showcase where students present research, internships and creative projects in formats ranging from poster sessions and academic talks to performances and community-based work.<\/p>\n
For one day each year, classrooms, performance spaces and meeting rooms across campus transform into a living gallery of student achievement. Undergraduates share findings with faculty, peers and industry partners, often translating complex ideas into clear, compelling stories.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s an enriching experience,\u201d Abim-Karmon said. \u201cYou\u2019re not only presenting, you\u2019re seeing what the rest of the Furman community is working on.\u201d<\/p>\n
That exchange is part of the point. Students move between sessions, ask questions and make connections across disciplines \u2013 turning individual projects into a shared academic experience.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou need to present. You need to have those social skills,\u201d he added. \u201cHow do you tell your story and keep someone engaged?\u201d<\/p>\n
Furman Engaged, Fully Realized<\/strong><\/p>\nFor Criss, the program reflects something deeper than a single presentation.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur students see themselves as the professionals that they are,\u201d she said. \u201cThey are primed, ready and already acting in a professional way.\u201d<\/p>\n
Abim-Karmon agrees and sees it as both a showcase and a culmination.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve done Furman Engaged every year,\u201d he said. \u201cIt feels like I\u2019m closing that loop right now.\u201d<\/p>\n
But beyond the presentation, it\u2019s the mentorship that endures.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat faculty-to-student relationship has shaped my Furman career,\u201d he said. \u201cWherever I go, that\u2019s something I\u2019ll want.\u201d<\/p>\n
