In recent months, Buddhist monks participated in a “Walk for Peace” that covered multiple states including South Carolina. The trek presented an opportunity for FOX Carolina’s<\/a> Enrique Salinas to highlight Furman’s Place of Peace and speak with Victoria (“Tori”) Montrose<\/a>, assistant professor of religion and Asian studies.<\/p>\n

Originally built in Japan in 1984, Place of Peace was offered to Furman in 2004 when the Tsuzuki family who owned the building moved from the property where it stood. It was dismantled piece by piece (all 2,400 of them), ferried across the Pacific on a cargo ship, through the Panama Canal, then on to Charleston, South Carolina, where it sat in a warehouse until funding to rebuild it on Furman’s campus became available in 2008.<\/p>\n

Montrose spoke with Salinas about the temple, Buddhism and its origins, and why the “Walk for Peace” is inspiring to so many.
