Various student groups and offices at Furman University have come together to develop Black History Month programming for our community. The month\u2019s celebration kicked off on Jan. 30 with the university\u2019s\u00a0Joseph Vaughn Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n

They continued on Monday\u00a0at the Burgiss Theater with \u201cRemembering, Reframing and Reclaiming: The Story of Black History Month,\u201d a panel-style event providing insight on the development and significance of Black History Month.<\/p>\n

There are many more events happening on campus this month. A few of them include:<\/p>\n

Divine 9 Greek Showcase: History of Strolling (CLP)<\/strong><\/p>\n

February 4th, 6:30-8 pm, Burgiss Theater<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Rho Zeta Chapter, The Xi Omega Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Divine Nine Greek Showcase is a dynamic Black History Month program that honors the history, service and cultural impact of historically Black fraternities and sororities through education, storytelling and performance.<\/p>\n

Sankofa African American Museum on Wheels (CLP)<\/strong><\/p>\n

February 10, Watkins Room<\/strong><\/p>\n

Museum is open 11 am-4 pm, the CLP is 1-2 pm<\/strong><\/p>\n

Black Faculty Staff Association, with co-sponsorship from the History Department, Anthropology Department, Politics and International Affairs Department and Furman Libraries<\/em><\/p>\n

The Sankofa Museum is a nationally touring educational exhibit founded in 1995 that explores American history through authentic artifacts and the lived experiences of its people.<\/p>\n

Fireside Chat on Afrofuturism (CLP)<\/strong><\/p>\n

February 11, 12:30 pm, Burgiss Theater<\/strong><\/p>\n

Center for Interpersonal Connections & NAACP<\/em><\/p>\n

This fireside chat with Roger Sneed and Sara Daise explores Afrofuturism as an interdisciplinary intellectual framework that examines history, culture, philosophy and speculative thought to understand how Black communities imagine alternative futures and social transformation.<\/p>\n

NAACP Founders Day Banquet<\/strong><\/p>\n

February 12, 6-7 pm, Garden Room<\/strong><\/p>\n

NAACP<\/em><\/p>\n

A program dedicated to the re-ignition and recognition of the NAACP\u2019s values and mission. Food will be provided.<\/p>\n

Love Removes the Mask: A True Story of Language, Race, Class, and Identity (CLP)<\/strong><\/p>\n

February 13, 12:30 pm, JHN 101<\/strong><\/p>\n

Linguistics Department and Furman Humanities Center<\/em><\/p>\n

Tracey Weldon, professor of English and linguistics and\u00a0interim senior associate dean for Graduate Studies and Faculty Development in the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Carolina, will speak at Furman.<\/p>\n

Engaging Communities for Environmental Justice: Flooding and Gentrification in Black Communities (CLP)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

February 19, 5 pm, Burgiss Theater<\/strong><\/p>\n

Center for Interpersonal Connections & NAACP<\/em><\/p>\n

Talk on flooding and gentrification of Black communities in South Carolina with Jaime McCauley and Jennifer Mokos.<\/p>\n

Journey Through Gospel Music (CLP)<\/strong><\/p>\n

February 26th, 6-7 pm, Burgiss Theater<\/strong><\/p>\n

Furman University Gospel Ensemble<\/em><\/p>\n

The \u201cJourney Through Gospel Music\u201d cultural life program recounts the evolution of gospel music through chronicles spanning from the Pre-Gospel era in the late 19th Century to present-day, contemporary Gospel music.<\/p>\n
