{"id":39215,"date":"2025-08-28T14:38:39","date_gmt":"2025-08-28T18:38:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/?p=39215"},"modified":"2025-09-02T14:34:25","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T18:34:25","slug":"furman-students-get-real-world-lessons-in-managing-millions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/furman-students-get-real-world-lessons-in-managing-millions\/","title":{"rendered":"Furman students get real-world lessons in managing millions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four Furman University students recently had the rare chance to be part of the university\u2019s $43 million bond negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>Vice President for Finance and Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/susan-a-maddux\/\">Susan Maddux<\/a> and her team were heading to the Atlanta offices of financial services firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raymondjames.com\/atlanta-branch\/\">Raymond James<\/a> \u2013 the university underwriter \u2013 to refinance two existing bonds on July 29. They came eager and ready to learn, taking extensive notes even when there wasn\u2019t a test to study for, Maddux said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey understood more about capital markets than I did at their age,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The staff at Raymond James were welcoming hosts, inviting students onto their trading floor to discuss debt financing, interest rates and investor behaviors, Maddux said. Furman\u2019s financial advisor, PFM, also joined for the event and interacted with students. \u00a0The students attended interviews while investors asked Maddux questions to gauge if Furman\u2019s bonds were right for them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s rare for someone outside of the financial representatives involved to observe this process firsthand,\u201d said Denham, an economics major from Tampa, Florida. \u201cBeing part of an event that directly impacts our university community made it especially meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Bonner, a business administration major from Charleston, South Carolina, the real-world applications of these finance principles were much more exciting than she ever imagined. After the deal was done, the students and Furman staff joined Raymond James representatives for dinner. They made us feel like part of the team, even as undergraduates,\u201d said Malla, a business administration major from the Netherlands. Malla had previously met some of the Raymond James staff while at the 2023 Summer Business and Innovation Bootcamp hosted by Furman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/innovation-entrepreneurship\">Hill Institute<\/a> for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n<p>It was a team effort, said Khatskevich, a business administration major from Belarus. \u201cBesides all the technical expertise, I realized how important the collaborative nature of the work is. Communication and teamwork are keys to success,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Maddux and her team reached out to students through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/sandra-roberson\/\">Sandra Roberson<\/a>, professor and chair of business and accounting, and associate professor of finance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/francis-kim\/\">Francis Kim<\/a>.
