One of those mentioned was \u201cThe World is on Fire\u201d by Furman English professor Joni Tevis. Jones called the stories \u201capocalyptic in nature\u201d and said \u201ceach story is wrapped around a different place, not necessarily in the South, so it&#8217;s a mashup of history, place and childlike wonder, but all of them are the strangest places that feel apocalyptic, like the Liberace Museum.\u201d One of Tevis\u2019 recent essays received a Pushcart Prize, a major literary award which honors the best poetry, short fiction, essays and other works that appear in small presses.
