{"id":3874,"date":"2015-07-14T19:30:01","date_gmt":"2015-07-14T23:30:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2016\/02\/17\/furman-singers-alumni-return-home-in-august\/"},"modified":"2022-11-07T14:53:38","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T19:53:38","slug":"furman-singers-alumni-return-home-in-august","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/furman-singers-alumni-return-home-in-august\/","title":{"rendered":"Furman Singers alumni return home in August"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_18418\" style=\"width: 341px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2022\/08\/singers-reunion.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18418\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18418 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2022\/08\/singers-reunion.jpg\" alt=\"The Furman Singers alumni will perform Aug. 9 at the 10:30 a.m. worship service of First Baptist Church Greenville.\" width=\"331\" height=\"226\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 331px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 331\/226;\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18418\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Furman Singers alumni will perform Aug. 9 at the 10:30 a.m. worship service of First Baptist Church Greenville.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>More than 150 alumni of the Furman University Singers will gather on campus Aug. 7-9 to celebrate their 19th biennial reunion, which will conclude with a performance Sunday, Aug. 9 during the 10:30 a.m. worship service at First Baptist Church of Greenville.<\/p>\n<p>The program will be conducted by Hugh Floyd and Bingham Vick, Jr.\u00a0 Floyd is the current director of the Furman Singers, while Vick directed the group from 1970 through 2010.<\/p>\n<p>The public is invited to attend the Sunday worship service.<\/p>\n<p>Several noted Singers alumni will serve as accompanists during the service, including Robert Blocker \u201968, Dean of the School of Music at Yale University; Robert Haigler \u201974, a retired teacher and performer in Chicago; and Paul Thomas \u201911, organist at The Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul in Charleston.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s amazing what happens when we all get together,\u201d Floyd said.\u00a0 \u201cThe singing is outstanding, the fellowship is genuine and full of fun, and we all go away with a great booster-shot of joy and satisfaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Singers reunions began in 1979 under Vick and the late DuPre Rhame, director and founder of the Furman Singers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not unusual for college choirs to hold occasional reunions,\u201d said Vick, who is also the longtime conductor and artistic director for the Greenville Chorale. \u201cWith the strong bonds formed through rehearsals and performances throughout the college years, life-long friendships and even marriages are forged. We\u2019ve continued these biennial weekends all these years because the alumni are so enthusiastic about coming back and re-living their Singers experience. It is always a joyous, fun-filled, emotional and spiritual time for us all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The worship service at First Baptist Church will include \u201cYe shall have a song\u201d from <em>The Peaceable Kingdom<\/em> by Randall Thompson; \u201cBeati quorum via\u201d by Charles V.
