Furman University&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/kathleen-casey\/\">Kathleen B. Casey<\/a> lays it all out in her new book &#8220;The Things She Carried: A Cultural History of the Purse in America&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/the-things-she-carried-9780197587829?q=the%20things%20she%20carried&amp;lang=en&amp;cc=us\">Oxford University Press<\/a>) due out August 4. Casey, professor of history and director of the Women&#8217;s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program, scoured abandoned buildings, archives, advertisements and museum collections to craft a book that explores how &#8220;an object that both ordinary and extraordinary Americans used to influence social, cultural, economic, and political change.&#8221; Casey&#8217;s book received reviews in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forewordreviews.com\/reviews\/the-things-she-carried\/\">Foreword<\/a> and in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.libraryjournal.com\/review\/the-things-she-carried-a-cultural-history-of-the-purse-in-america-2268766\">Library Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Professor of History and Director of the Women&#8217;s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program Kathleen B.
