The horrid nature of the crime, the cold-blooded assassination of innocent people solely because they were black\u2014all under the ideology of white supremacy\u2014shocked the nation. In an op-ed for the <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.postandcourier.com\/article\/20150708\/PC1002\/150709510\">Post and Courier<\/a><\/em><\/strong> in Charleston and <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenvilleonline.com\/story\/opinion\/contributors\/2015\/07\/10\/dick-riley-south-carolina-now-can-see-way-forward\/29953337\/\">The Greenville News<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, Richard Riley and Don Gordon write that now is the time to work deliberately to effect systemic change and build a more inclusive South Carolina. Riley, a 1954 Furman graduate, has served as Governor of South Carolina and U.S. Secretary of Education.
