Nelsen, the Jane Fishburne Hipp Professor of Politics and International Affairs, weighed in on NATO&#8217;s defense spending and Finland&#8217;s possible role in brokering peace between Ukraine and Russia. Nelsen referenced a question raised by a Finnish reporter who asked President Trump about his ties to Finland President, Alexander Stubb, a Furman alumnus and former student of Nelsen. Nelsen said Finland, while now a member of NATO, serves as a &#8220;trusted mediator&#8221; between Western and Eastern allies, and Stubb could influence the peace process.<\/p>\n<p>Days after the U.S. strike on Iran, Nelsen was asked about the war in the Middle East. He said the parties need to come together and seek a diplomatic solution or &#8220;we&#8217;ll go through these cycles of violence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nelsen goes on record with FOX Carolina about the prospect of peace in the Middle East as well as between Ukraine and Russia.
