The Phi Beta Kappa<\/a> National Honor Society inducted a new class of initiates April 15. The 67 initiates joined the selective honorary society in the Trone Center\u2019s Watkins room, followed by a reception with an inspiring toast by Brandon Inabinet, chair of the Faculty Council, professor of communication studies and Phi Beta Kappa member.<\/p>\n

Only about 10 percent of the nation\u2019s universities have Phi Beta Kappa chapters. Furman University\u2019s chapter<\/a> started in 1973 and initiated its first member, Nobel Laureate Charles Hard Townes \u201935, on April 23, 1974.<\/p>\n

Students are considered for election to Phi Beta Kappa based on their scholarly achievements in the liberal arts and sciences, broad cultural interests and good character. Students exemplifying the qualities and intellectual pursuits of Phi Beta Kappa are invited to join the society during the spring of their senior year, but a small number of members of the junior class may also be invited. This year\u2019s inductees include Stasi Hester, a politics and international affairs major who passed away in January. The complete list is below.<\/p>\n
