{"id":3762,"date":"2015-05-12T18:40:39","date_gmt":"2015-05-12T22:40:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2016\/02\/17\/mens-cycling-team-makes-clean-sweep-at-national-championships\/"},"modified":"2022-11-07T17:32:54","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T22:32:54","slug":"mens-cycling-team-makes-clean-sweep-at-national-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/mens-cycling-team-makes-clean-sweep-at-national-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Men&#8217;s cycling team makes clean sweep at national championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How good is the Furman University men\u2019s cycling team?<\/p>\n<p>This past weekend at the USA Cycling Collegiate National Championships in Asheville, N.C., Furman claimed victories in the<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17938\" style=\"width: 285px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2022\/08\/brendan-rhim-small.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17938\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17938 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2022\/08\/brendan-rhim-small.jpg\" alt=\"Freshman Brendan Rhim celebrates victory in the USA Cycling Collegiate National Championships.\" width=\"275\" height=\"328\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 275px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 275\/328;\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17938\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Freshman Brendan Rhim celebrates victory in the USA Cycling Collegiate National Championships.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Road Race, Criterium and Team Time Trial events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were the first men&#8217;s team in the history of collegiate cycling to claim victories in those three events at one national championship,\u201d said Rusty Miller \u201998, who coaches the Furman team.\u00a0 \u201cAnd we did it with four freshmen and two sophomores.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brendan Rhim, a freshman from Hanover, Vt., won both the Road Race and the Criterium.\u00a0 The team of Rhim, Charlie Hough of Travelers Rest, Brian Suto of Oxford, Ct., and Richard Rainville of Livonia, Mi., won the time trial event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrendan had a tremendous championship,\u201d Miller said.\u00a0 \u201cHe won the 75-mile road race by breaking away from the field and riding solo for about 45 miles.\u00a0 He was a heavily-marked pre-race favorite, and he simply rode away from the six full varsity teams and 25 club teams who coordinated in a desperate chase to catch him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miller said winning the Team Time Trial event at the national championships was particularly gratifying since it was a season-long goal that could only be accomplished through team work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the Road Race or Criterium can be won by a star rider with some help from teammates, the time trial can only be taken by a squad of precisely-drilled athletes,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cWe held weekly practices and devoted a lot of time to learn the nuances of winning at this discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How good is the Furman men\u2019s cycling team?
