{"id":3756,"date":"2015-05-10T01:47:52","date_gmt":"2015-05-10T05:47:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2016\/02\/17\/furman-holds-2015-spring-commencement\/"},"modified":"2022-11-07T17:32:58","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T22:32:58","slug":"furman-holds-2015-spring-commencement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/furman-holds-2015-spring-commencement\/","title":{"rendered":"Furman holds 2015 spring commencement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Read commencement speeches of <a href=\"http:\/\/newspress.furman.edu\/2015\/04\/callie-robertson-commencement-speech-2015\/\"><strong>Callie Robertson<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/newspress.furman.edu\/2015\/04\/harold-warlick-commencement-address-2015\/\"><strong>Harold Warlick, Jr.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Furman University awarded 649 undergraduate and master\u2019s degrees and presented its top academic honors during graduation exercises Saturday, May 9.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2022\/08\/commencement-photo-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-17899 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2022\/08\/commencement-photo-1.jpg\" alt=\"commencement-photo-1\" width=\"300\" height=\"285\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/285;\" \/><\/a>Approximately 7,100 people attended the commencement activities in Paladin Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>The Scholarship Cup, given to the graduating senior with the highest academic average, was awarded to Hayley Elisabeth Cunningham, a psychology major from Midway, Ky.<\/p>\n<p>Cunningham also received the General Excellence award as the outstanding female in the class of 2015.\u00a0 Luke Darby Christie, a communication studies major from Due West, received the General Excellence Award as the outstanding male in the class.\u00a0 Both awards are given by the Furman faculty.<\/p>\n<p>Furman also presented the Alester G. Furman, Jr., and Janie Earle Furman awards for meritorious teaching and advising.<\/p>\n<p>The teaching awards went to Dr. Vincent Joseph Hausmann, Associate Professor of English, and Dr. Cynthia P. King, Associate Professor of Communication Studies<\/p>\n<p>The advising awards were presented to Dr. John J.
