America!\u201d: Vanishing Time and Space in Clarence Jordan\u2019s \u201cThings Needed for Our Peace,\u201d Furman University, 1969<\/i>) and Cook English \u201915\u00a0<i>(Free Agent or Escaped Slave?: The Reverend Jesse Jackson\u2019s Response to Dan Gilbert\u2019s \u201cThe Letter\u201d)<\/i>\u00a0will present papers on Rhetorical Criticism. Kate Stevens \u201918 (<i>From Protest to Politics: A Man Undone<\/i>), Thomas Stubbs \u201918<i>\u00a0(A General Under Fire: Indirect Accusation and Propaganda in Joe McCarthy\u2019s America\u2019s Retreat from Victory: The Story of George Catlett Marshall),<\/i>\u00a0Connor Courtney \u201918\u00a0<i>(That\u2019s the Way it Is. Or was It? Walter Cronkite and the Camera Angles of the Vietnam War)<\/i>, and Kellie Colgain \u201918\u00a0<i>(The 1968 Miss America Pageant Protest: More than Just Bra Burning<\/i>) will present papers on Rhetoric in the Age of Protest. Amanda Payton \u201915 (<i>The Dust Bowl: The Dichotomy between Media Coverage and Scientific Understanding<\/i>) and Chris Edel \u201915\u00a0<i>(First Effective Settlement and its Correlation with Local Sports Talk Radio)<\/i>\u00a0will also present papers. Eli Washington \u201915\u00a0<i>(Life is Drag: Gender Performativity and Subaltern Public in RuPaul\u2019s Drag Race)<\/i>\u00a0will present a paper on Race, Class and Gender in the Media and Ariel Blackwood \u201917 (<i>On \u201cThe Myth of Mental Illness\u201d)<\/i>\u00a0will present a paper on Argumentation.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the four papers selected as Top Rhetoric Studies Papers, were written by Furman students Eleanor Palmer and Kate Stevens and will be presented on a panel honoring the best student work at the conference. Stevens wrote her paper in her first semester at Furman.<\/p>\n<p>The conference is one of the largest and most prestigious undergraduate honors conferences in the field and is highly competitive, said Communication Studies Professor Sean O\u2019Rourke.
