Dr. Michael Bressler<\/p><\/div>\n

It has been a year since President Vladimir Putin reclaimed Crimea as a part of Russia, which has led to a raft of economic sanctions against the nation and heightened tensions across Europe and the rest of the world.\u00a0 But as Russia backs separatist movements in Ukraine and is behaving more aggressively towards NATO, is there even more tension to come?<\/p>\n

Furman political science professor Michael Bressler will talk about Putin and Russia in the post-Soviet era when he speaks at the university\u2019s High Noon spring lecture series Wednesday, April 8 at the Upcountry History Museum-Furman.<\/p>\n

His lecture, \u201cRussia in the Time of Putin,\u201d begins at noon.\u00a0 It is free and open to the public, and is the final talk of the spring season.<\/p>\n

Dr. Bressler, a specialist in international relations, will talk about Russia\u2019s political development in the post-Soviet era, the connection between its domestic politics and foreign policy, and the prospects for the country\u2019s democratic development.\u00a0 He will also take an in-depth look at the institutional and political foundations of Putin\u2019s system.<\/p>\n

Bressler, a member of the Furman faculty since 1993, teaches courses on World Politics, International Relations, International Peace and Security, and the Politics of Russia. \u00a0He is editor of and a contributing author to the book Understanding Contemporary Russia<\/em>. He received Furman\u2019s Meritorious Teaching Award in 2005.\u00a0 He is a graduate of Ohio State University, and received master\u2019s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan.<\/p>\n

The Upcountry History Museum\/Furman is located at 540 Buncombe Street in downtown Greenville\u2019s Heritage Green area.<\/p>\n
