{"id":36420,"date":"2025-02-25T21:27:48","date_gmt":"2025-02-26T02:27:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/?p=36420"},"modified":"2025-02-25T21:27:48","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T02:27:48","slug":"furman-again-a-top-producer-of-fulbright-scholars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/furman-again-a-top-producer-of-fulbright-scholars\/","title":{"rendered":"Furman again a top producer of Fulbright Scholars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Furman University has again been named a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fulbrightprogram.org\/tpi\/\">Fulbright Top Producing Institution<\/a> by the U.S. Department of State\u2019s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The recognition means Furman has among the highest number of faculty and administrators selected for\u00a0the\u00a0Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing named a Fulbright Top Producing Institution acknowledges Furman\u2019s world-class faculty and one of the many ways <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/furman-advantage\/\">The Furman Advantage<\/a> helps our graduates become global scholars and citizens,\u201d said Scott Henderson, the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Education and director of National and International Scholarships.<\/p>\n<p>Two Furman faculty members are current Fulbright scholars. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/lori-alvin-receives-fulbright-u-s-scholar-award\/\">Lori Alvin,<\/a> the Henry Keith and Ellen Hard Townes Associate Professor of Mathematics, is currently a Fulbright U.S. Scholar in Slovenia. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/roger-sneed-receives-fulbright-u-s-scholar-award\/\">Roger Sneed<\/a>, a professor of religion, is teaching in the Czech Republic.<\/p>\n<p>Furman also has one current Fulbright student. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/alex-threlkeld-24-bound-for-germany-with-a-fulbright-teaching-grant\/\">Alex Threlkeld \u201924<\/a> was the 53<sup>rd<\/sup> Furman student to receive a Fulbright grant. He\u2019s currently in Germany with the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program.<\/p>\n<p>The university has had great success in recent years securing Fulbright awards. It was named a Top Producing Institution in 2013-2014, 2015-2016, 2020-2021 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/six-seniors-awarded-fulbright-grants\/\">when six students<\/a> were Fulbright awardees), and 2023-2024. Since 2015, 29 Furman students have received Fulbrights<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAssisting students and faculty apply for and receive prestigious awards such as the Fulbright is important because they provide opportunities for deeply meaningful, life-changing experiences, which is at the heart of Furman\u2019s mission,\u201d said Henderson.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two Furman faculty members and one student are currently overseas on Fulbright awards.
