{"id":36383,"date":"2025-02-21T15:27:07","date_gmt":"2025-02-21T20:27:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/?p=36383"},"modified":"2025-02-21T15:27:07","modified_gmt":"2025-02-21T20:27:07","slug":"clp-commemorates-60-years-since-furmans-desegregation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/clp-commemorates-60-years-since-furmans-desegregation\/","title":{"rendered":"CLP commemorates 60 years since Furman\u2019s desegregation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Early one morning in his dorm room, surrounded by friends, Joseph Vaughn suddenly stopped a card game. \u201cI have a term paper to write!\u201d \u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt must have been 2 o\u2019clock in the morning,\u201d Raymond McGee \u201871 said during a Cultural Life Program commemorating 60 years of desegregation at Furman University. \u201cI asked him if he was serious. He said, \u2018Yeah, in French!\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Laughter rolled through the CLP crowd as current students recognized their own shared experiences in this early-morning bonding moment between McGee and Vaughn, the first Black undergraduate student at Furman. They were joined by several more alumni who attended the discussion virtually.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cJoe Vaughn was vitally important,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/cynthia-king\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Cynthia King<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, associate dean for diversity, equity and inclusive excellence. But the CLP aimed to describe what Furman was like after he left.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Friendships and bonds helped many of the panelists through difficult experiences. Several panelists described moments when they were the only Black student in their environment, whether on or off campus.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Psychology major Jada Session \u201925 grew up in a suburb of Atlanta surrounded by other Black people.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cComing to Furman and walking into my first class to see I was the only Black student, it was shocking,\u201d she said. But she found belonging and support when she joined Alpha Kappa Alpha, a sorority that\u2019s part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council. \u201cHaving that outlet is one of the best experiences I could have. They\u2019re going to be my sorority sisters for life, and Furman gave me that.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 1978, Russell Gambrell \u201979 was captain of the Paladins football team for their first championship in Southern Conference history. His love for Furman runs so deep he still comes back for homecoming each year, he said. She told the crowd about catching a man staring at her in a caf\u00e9.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cHe signaled at me to pull my headphones off and said, \u2018I\u2019m so sorry, I\u2019ve been living here for 12 years, and I\u2019ve never seen a Black person,\u2019\u201d she said. They\u2019ve became fast friends, and she said even now she has a connection with the 50-year-old Nepalese farmer living almost 8,000 miles from Furman.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The CLP also honored Black alumni who broke barriers by being among the first Black students to graduate from their respective academic programs. Students from the audience were invited up to the stage to hold up printouts displaying the names and majors of these alumni who couldn\u2019t attend the CLP.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cStudents come to Furman not knowing their own potential. They come unsure about their own possibilities,\u201d King said. \u201cThese stories and experiences, that\u2019s part of Furman\u2019s story.
