Duke Library.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sponsored by the Office of the Provost and Furman University Libraries, the reception highlighted more than $8 million in grants that funded 214 scholarly submissions, more than were recognized at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/record-breaking-submissions-and-grant-funds-celebrated-at-reception\/\">last year\u2019s reception<\/a>, said Director of Libraries <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/caroline-mills\/\">Caroline Mills<\/a>.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Every submitted work was included in the event, with long tables lined with abstracts or descriptions of each work. Topics and formats varied: Musical compositions, poetry and artwork were displayed beside papers on biology, mathematics, international politics, chemistry and other topics. Photo by Nathan Gray, Furman University.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThose of us in the library have decided that this work is too important to celebrate just once a year,\u201d said Mills. \u201cWe have now made a permanent, public display of books written by Furman authors in the Duke library.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;469777462&quot;:[927],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Each year, the people who submit their works are asked if they\u2019d be willing to give a four-minute presentation at the reception. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/patricia-sasser\/\">Patricia Sasser<\/a>, associate librarian of music, shared how her research began when she found two binders of sheet music anonymously donated to the music library. The binders belonged to <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarexchange.furman.edu\/periphery-kharbintsy1\/index.2.html\">Bella Tarakhovskaia<\/a>, a young Jewish woman born in 1903 in Melitopol, Ukraine, then under the control of Imperial Russia. She found a home in the city of Harbin, China, and was one of many who turned the small railway city into a multiethnic urban center with more than 100,000 inhabitants, Sasser said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;469777462&quot;:[927],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the margins of the sheet music Tarakhovskaia collected were handwritten notes in Russian. A Furman Advantage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/undergraduate-research\/summer-research-fellowship-application\/\">Summer Research Fellowship<\/a> funded an undergraduate researcher to help Sasser early on in her work: CiGi Curry \u201921 helped track down people and places named in the marginalia.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;469777462&quot;:[927],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Their research traced the historic and cultural connections of the notes Tarakhovskaia and her contemporaries made in these binders, exploring a vast network of music printers, publishers and vendors.
