{"id":36269,"date":"2025-02-14T14:25:33","date_gmt":"2025-02-14T19:25:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/?p=36269"},"modified":"2025-02-14T14:25:33","modified_gmt":"2025-02-14T19:25:33","slug":"cothran-centers-cherokee-trip-offers-students-insight-into-indigenous-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/cothran-centers-cherokee-trip-offers-students-insight-into-indigenous-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Cothran Center\u2019s Cherokee trip offers students insight into Indigenous culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Native American history is still being written, and Furman University students traveled to Cherokee, North Carolina, to learn directly from people of the sovereign Cherokee Nation.<\/p>\n<p>The trip, hosted by Furman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/cothran-center-vocational-reflection\/\">Cothran Center<\/a>, ran from Jan. 17-20. Students had the chance to visit museums and cultural centers and have in-depth discussions with Indigenous people. Photo provided.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIn a liberal arts education, we expose students to a variety of subjects so they learn new ways of thinking and problem-solving,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/danielle-vinson\/\">Danielle Vinson<\/a>, professor of politics and international affairs. Photo provided.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For sustainability science major Nabila Wilson \u201927, this trip was a chance to expand on what she learned about Native American cultures in Turner\u2019s \u201cReligion in America\u201d class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the Cherokee people are sovereign, they have a lot of power to shape their justice system,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cI\u2019m really interested in policy, so this made me want to know more about the Cherokee justice system and how other tribes are using this freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During a fireside chat with Furman\u2019s first known Cherokee student <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/shelbys-song\/\">Shelby Parker \u201914<\/a>, Wilson said she was moved by Parker\u2019s description of the ridicule and shame she felt at times over her heritage.
