{"id":36234,"date":"2025-02-12T13:38:11","date_gmt":"2025-02-12T18:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/?p=36234"},"modified":"2025-11-03T11:02:54","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T16:02:54","slug":"furmans-iach-helps-map-hunger-throughout-the-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/furmans-iach-helps-map-hunger-throughout-the-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Furman\u2019s IACH helps map hunger throughout the state"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How can a community fight food insecurity if they don\u2019t know what\u2019s causing it?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Furman University\u2019s Institute for the Advancement of Community Health (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/institute-advancement-community-health\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">IACH<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">) has partnered with Food is Medicine South Carolina (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodismedicinesc.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">FiMSC<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.openfields.com\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Openfields<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to map food insecurity risk throughout the state. This data tool was developed with funding from S.C. SNAP-Ed and enables community stakeholders to compare food insecurity risk with relevant health outcomes, demographics and community resource data.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You may have heard the term \u201cfood deserts\u201d \u2013 areas that lack access to nutritionally adequate foods. But \u201caccess alone does not solve the problem,\u201d said IACH Director of Community Action <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/melissa-fair\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Melissa Fair &#8217;10<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cPoverty is the leading indicator for why people don\u2019t have access to healthy food,\u201d she said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The researchers involved in this project developed the South Carolina Food Insecurity <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/7b4ffbef8a584244be5ffcd1a6772518\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Risk Index<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which measures multiple economic and social vulnerabilities people face at the census tract level. This serves as an indicator of how likely people in each area are to experience food insecurity. Rusnak said it can answer questions like how food insecurity data overlaps with coronary heart disease rates or give insight into how poverty rates and demographic data affect access to healthy food. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s not a one-size-fits-all approach,\u201d Fair said. Having census tract-level data allows tailor-made approaches to tackling food insecurity at the local level. Fair said this map can inform where resources like food pantries, soup kitchens and nutrition education programs are deployed.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe were able to cast a vision for a data resource that gives policy makers and community leaders a tool to engage their stakeholders at the state and local level,\u201d Rusnak said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">IACH has history with this kind of work, since Fair previously helped develop a similar food insecurity map for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/View\/index.html?appid=fef19ceac3b64abd8c381f35bdb3e72b\">Greenville County<\/a> in partnership with Furman&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/shi-institute\/\">Shi Institute<\/a> for Sustainable Communities the nonprofit coalition LiveWell Greenville. When developing that map, Fair said IACH partnered directly with community organizations running programs delivering food directly to communities in need.
