{"id":36012,"date":"2025-01-28T17:34:53","date_gmt":"2025-01-28T22:34:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/?p=36012"},"modified":"2025-02-04T14:06:13","modified_gmt":"2025-02-04T19:06:13","slug":"joseph-vaughn-plaque-now-hanging-in-lakeview-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/joseph-vaughn-plaque-now-hanging-in-lakeview-hall\/","title":{"rendered":"Joseph Vaughn plaque now hanging in Lakeview Hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When Furman University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/diversity-equity-inclusion\/inclusive-communities\/\">Center for Interpersonal Connections<\/a> relocated from the Trone Student Center office space it held for years to the new Lakeview Hall, they made sure to take an important fixture with them: a plaque in memory of Joseph Allen Vaughn, who enrolled on Jan. 29, 1965 as the first Black undergraduate student at Furman. The plaque was installed in Lakeview on Jan. 14.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe plaque serves as a reminder of not just the memory of Joseph Vaughn but what he represented: radical change in the face of adversity,\u201d said Franklin Ellis, associate dean, director of the CIC and special assistant to the president for diversity and belonging.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoseph Vaughn represents growth and change for the better of not only Furman but of our society. When visitors see the plaque I want them to see how small acts of courage can have a large positive impact on the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/diversity-equity-inclusion\/joseph-vaughn-day\/\">Joseph Vaughn Day<\/a> commemorates the man\u2019s courage and legacy, and reminds everyone of the power of belonging.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s celebration is Friday, Jan. 31, starting at 12:15 on the Joseph Vaughn Plaza.
