The Furman University Music Department\u2019s Lyric Theatre will present Diary of One Who Vanished<\/em>, Saturday, March 28 at 8 p.m. in Daniel Recital Hall on campus.<\/p>\n

Directed by Furman Professor of Voice Grant Knox, D.M., the performance is open to the public. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $10 for students.<\/p>\n

Diary of One Who Vanished <\/em>is co-presented with the Furman Women\u2019s Chorale and is conducted by Furman Music Professor Vivian Hamilton, D.M.A.<\/p>\n

\"Mezzo-soprano<\/a>

Mezzo-soprano Magdalena Wor<\/p><\/div>\n

The half opera, half song cycle features music by Czech composer Leo\u0161 Jan\u00e1cek. The music is performed by Martin Katz, also known as the \u201cgold standard of accompanists.\u201d Katz has performed on more than five continents with some of world\u2019s finest singers and is the Artur Schnabel Collegiate Professor of Collaborative Piano at the University of Michigan. Katz will perform with tenor Knox, and mezzo-soprano Magdalena W\u00f3r, guest artist from Atlanta.<\/p>\n

Katz will also lead a master class Friday, March 27, 2-5 p.m. in Daniel Recital Hall. The class is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n

In 1917, while reading his local newspaper, Leo\u0161 Jan\u00e1cek discovered the poems that he would later set to music in The Diary of One Who Vanished<\/em>. Written by Ozef Kalda and published anonymously, the poems tell the story of a farmer\u2019s boy who abandons his home because he has fallen in love with a Gypsy. The cycle is sung in Czech with English supertitles.<\/p>\n
