Furman students have won undergraduate poster awards the last two years, and student participation is what earned Furman hosting duties for this year\u2019s conference. Habron and fellow Earth, Environmental and Sustainability Sciences Professor \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/suresh-muthukrishnan\">Suresh Muthukrishnan<\/a> spent more than a year planning and organizing the conference and are developing guidelines and responsibilities to help steer the efforts of future hosts. This year\u2019s meeting had record attendance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur participation totally results from The Furman Advantage, showcasing our undergraduate research across both majors, sustainability science and earth and\u00a0 environmental science,\u201d Habron said. \u201cWe have also used the conference to meet with alums in the area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furman Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Beth Pontari and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/shi-institute\/\">The Shi Institute<\/a> for Sustainable Communities Executive Director Andrew Predmore gave the conference\u2019s welcome address, highlighting Furman\u2019s commitment to sustainability and community wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>Guests were invited on a field trip to the nearby mountains led by Muthukrishnan and Professor Emeritus Bill Ranson, and a walking tour of downtown Greenville by Habron and Center for Applied Sustainability Research Director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/mike-winiski\/\">Mike Winiski<\/a>. The weekend featured panel discussions, paper presentations and poster sessions alongside networking events, a geography bowl championship and other social and educational opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Six of Furman\u2019s international students participated in the event as volunteers, getting their first shot at attending a professional conference and helping faculty lead the field trips. She studied land <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/research-by-furman-professor-and-former-students-featured-in-environmental-journal\/\">conservation policies in Costa Rica<\/a> with Associate Professor<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/karen-allen\"> Karen Allen<\/a> in 2019.
