For the past three years, Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Gregory Scrivens worked from a desk in one of the world\u2019s largest office buildings. He shared the space with 23,000 coworkers spread among five stories and 17.5 miles of hallways.<\/p>\n

These days, he works with a staff of 11 persons and 62 cadets in Furman University\u2019s Army ROTC Paladin Battalion. The hallway in the office suite is less than 50 feet long.<\/p>\n

Growing up in the South, LTC Scrivens said he\u2019s grateful for his new view.<\/p>\n

LTC Scrivens joined the Furman family this fall as the new professor and department chair of the Military Science program, replacing LTC Tom Gilleran who served since 2011.<\/p>\n

Before coming to Furman, LTC Scrivens served with the Department of the Army Inspector General Agency at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. He previously worked as an operations officer for a multi-national brigade; as an executive officer and Company Commander during tours in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Macedonia. He will complete 20 years of service to the U.S. Army in November.<\/p>\n

Upon hearing about the vacancy in Furman\u2019s program, LTC Scrivens jumped at the opportunity, competing against many other candidates for the post.<\/p>\n

\u201cI plan to continue the legacy of excellence LTC Gilleran pursued and hope to take it to the next level,\u201d LTC Scrivens said. \u201cThis is a fantastic position to mentor and prepare our young men and women for their commissions as second lieutenants.\u201d<\/p>\n

He will be implementing the Army\u2019s new curriculum from Cadet Command, which includes a focused emphasis on critical thinking and creative problem-solving.<\/p>\n

And of course, he\u2019ll be waking up early each morning to lead physical training (PT) at 6 a.m. for all cadets from Furman and North Greenville University to prepare them for their biannual physical fitness tests.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is such a strong bond in the Army and it definitely shows in Furman\u2019s program,\u201d said LTC Scrivens, adding that he hopes to help cadets take advantage of the amazing opportunities available to them while in the Paladin Battalion and later in the U.S. Army.<\/p>\n

LTC Scrivens earned his bachelor\u2019s degree in international business and economics from the University of West Georgia and a master\u2019s degree in administration from Central Michigan University. He is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys off-shore fishing, hunting, and shooting. He is engaged to Ms. Melanie Liles. In addition to his father, Colin, Scrivens has two brothers, Howard and Arran, and a sister-in-law, Arran\u2019s wife, Jennifer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
