It is co-sponsored by Furman\u2019s College Republicans, Political Science Department, and the Tocqueville Program.<\/p>\n<p>Douthat was the youngest op-ed columnist ever hired at <em>The New York Times<\/em> when he joined the paper in 2009.\u00a0 Prior to that, he was a senior editor and blogger at <em>The Atlantic<\/em>.\u00a0 He is the film critic for <em>National Review<\/em> and has also contributed to <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>, <em>The Weekly Standard<\/em>, <em>GQ<\/em>, <em>Slate<\/em> and other publications.<\/p>\n<p>He is the author of several books, including <em>Bad Religion: How We Became a Nation of Heretics<\/em> and <em>Privilege: Harvard and the Education of the Ruling Class<\/em>.\u00a0 He is also co-author, with Reihan Salam, of <em>Grand New Party: How Republicans Can Win the Working Class and Save the American Dream<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, contact Furman\u2019s News and Media Relations office at 864-294-3107.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ross Douthat, op-ed columnist for The New York Times, will speak on the Furman campus Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 5 p.m. in Burgiss Theater of the Trone Student Center.
