{"id":34031,"date":"2024-09-16T08:54:53","date_gmt":"2024-09-16T12:54:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/?p=34031"},"modified":"2024-09-24T06:46:28","modified_gmt":"2024-09-24T10:46:28","slug":"furman-fellows-awardees-are-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/furman-fellows-awardees-are-announced\/","title":{"rendered":"Furman Fellows explore arts, tech and the sense of self in storytelling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Five members of Furman\u2019s Class of 2025 have received one of the university\u2019s highest honors.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academic-affairs\/furman-fellows\/\">Furman Fellowships<\/a>\u00a0are awarded each year to recognize seniors\u2019 accomplishments, contributions and potential, with a\u00a0$10,000 award to pursue their academic, creative and professional pathways.<\/p>\n<p>To apply, each of this year\u2019s awardees proposed a project that they will lead during their senior year and ultimately present at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/furman-engaged\/\">Furman Engaged<\/a>, the university\u2019s annual campus-wide celebration of high-impact learning experiences, in April 2025, when a new class of Furman Fellows will be chosen.<\/p>\n<p>The Furman Fellowship is an endowed scholarship fund founded in 2004 with a gift from Trustee Emeritus\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/robert-h-buckman\/\">Robert H. Buckman<\/a>\u00a0and his wife, Joyce Mollerup. Jones \u201925, Piedmont, South Carolina<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/art\/program-overview\/studio-art\/\">studio arts<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/majors-minors-programs\/theatre-arts-major\/\">theatre<\/a>\u00a0double major, David T. Jones will develop a fashion collection, \u201cEveryman: Son of Eros,\u201d as a modern reinterpretation of the morality play \u201cEveryman.\u201d The show will collaborate with various fields including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/earth-environmental-sciences\/program-overview\/sustainability-science\/\">sustainability studies<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/theatre-arts\/\">theatre arts<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/art\/program-overview\/art-history\/\">art history<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/sociology\/\">sociology<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/anthropology\/\">anthropology<\/a>,\u00a0and aims to engage audiences with sustainable clothing practices. \u201cWhere the original represents everyone, the modern interpretation does not. The objective of this project is to reduce and lessen the challenges persons with disabilities (motor, visual, cognitive) typically face when attempting to play video games on their consoles, computers or mobile devices. \u201cI aim to create a game for not only a specific group of players, but for everyone. --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 298\/199;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-34078\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stephen Turner is a member of the Furman Fellows Class of 2025.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Stephen Turner \u201925, Inman, South Carolina<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/majors-minors-programs\/english-major\/\">English<\/a> major and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/majors-minors-programs\/film-studies-minor\/\">film studies<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/majors-minors-programs\/visual-strategy-minor\/\">visual strategy<\/a>\u00a0minor, Stephen Turner will create series of animated educational videos about being an adult with autism called \u201cMy Life as Neurodivergent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have always wanted to tell a story, and Furman has only encouraged that drive in me through the wonderful writing classes from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/english\/\">English department<\/a>,\u201d Turner said. \u201cNot only have those classes taught me the ins and outs of unity, style and revision, but they have also shown me the importance of looking inward for your story, either for nonfiction storytelling or for educational content.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Five Furman students were selected as Furman Fellows this year.
