Five members of Furman\u2019s Class of 2025 have received one of the university\u2019s highest honors.\u00a0Furman Fellowships<\/a>\u00a0are awarded each year to recognize seniors\u2019 accomplishments, contributions and potential, with a\u00a0$10,000 award to pursue their academic, creative and professional pathways.<\/p>\n

To apply, each of this year\u2019s awardees proposed a project that they will lead during their senior year and ultimately present at\u00a0Furman Engaged<\/a>, the university\u2019s annual campus-wide celebration of high-impact learning experiences, in April 2025, when a new class of Furman Fellows will be chosen.<\/p>\n

The Furman Fellowship is an endowed scholarship fund founded in 2004 with a gift from Trustee Emeritus\u00a0Robert H. Buckman<\/a>\u00a0and his wife, Joyce Mollerup. The fund was established to recognize seniors who use their creativity and imagination to make a difference in the school and the lives of others, Buckman said.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s Furman Fellows are:<\/p>\n

David Jones is a member of the Furman Fellows Class of 2025.<\/p><\/div>\n

David T. Jones \u201925, Piedmont, South Carolina<\/strong><\/p>\n

A\u00a0studio arts<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0theatre<\/a>\u00a0double major, David T. Jones will develop a fashion collection, \u201cEveryman: Son of Eros,\u201d as a modern reinterpretation of the morality play \u201cEveryman.\u201d The show will collaborate with various fields including\u00a0sustainability studies<\/a>,\u00a0theatre arts<\/a>,\u00a0art history<\/a>,\u00a0sociology<\/a> and\u00a0anthropology<\/a>,\u00a0and aims to engage audiences with sustainable clothing practices. \u201cWhere the original represents everyone, the modern interpretation does not. I want to explore this idea of being alien from what society tells you to be and that reminder permeating the world surrounding you,\u201d Jones said.<\/p>\n

Torrey Kridel \u201925, Clemmons, North Carolina<\/strong><\/p>\n

Torrey Kridel is a member of the Furman Fellows Class of 2025.<\/p><\/div>\n

A\u00a0biology<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0studio art<\/a>\u00a0double major, Torrey Kridel\u2019s project is \u201cThe Integration of Art,\u201d a juried art exhibition solely for undergraduate students.\u00a0Juried exhibitions are highly respected in the art world, but it can be difficult for undergraduates to compete with seasoned artists.\u00a0\u201cThis project aims to foster community and (create) opportunities for shared experiences among participating artists through workshops and a midpoint critique\u2026 [and provides an opportunity to show] they can be successful with an art career and open up conversations around the intentional choices between different disciplines,\u201d Kridel said. \u201cStudents will also walk away with a powerful portfolio showpiece.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jalen Livingston is a member of the Furman Fellows Class of 2025.<\/p><\/div>\n

Jalen Livingston \u201925, Columbia, South Carolina<\/strong><\/p>\n

A\u00a0computer science<\/a>\u00a0major, Jalen Livingston will develop a single-player, Sci-Fi RPG (role-playing game) experience on\u00a0ROBLOX, an online multiplayer platform consisting of innovative and free-to-play games. The objective of this project is to reduce and lessen the challenges persons with disabilities (motor, visual, cognitive) typically face when attempting to play video games on their consoles, computers or mobile devices. \u201cI aim to create a game for not only a specific group of players, but for everyone. I want to write an inspiring, imaginative, short-story narrative and implement it into a video game setting,\u201d Livingston said.<\/p>\n

Seth Jones \u201925, Tifton, Georgia<\/strong><\/p>\n

Seth Jones is a member of the Furman Fellows Class of 2025.<\/p><\/div>\n

A\u00a0theatre arts<\/a>\u00a0and English<\/a>\u00a0double major and\u00a0musical theatre<\/a>\u00a0minor, Seth Milton Jones has written a nine-person play, \u201cSPARTA,\u201d about a high school wrestling team that will be produced as part of the\u00a02024-2025 \u00a0<\/a>Furman University Theatre<\/a> Departmental Main Stage Session.\u00a0 \u201cAs an early career playwright, going through the development process will let me understand and strengthen my particular style of writing, what it means for me to take criticism, and see how my work affects people, not only on an analytical level but also on an emotional level,\u201d Jones said. \u201cAs a producer, I will learn about a larger side of theatre that deals with the logistics of creating and putting all the pieces of a project together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stephen Turner is a member of the Furman Fellows Class of 2025.<\/p><\/div>\n

Stephen Turner \u201925, Inman, South Carolina<\/strong><\/p>\n

An English<\/a> major and film studies<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0visual strategy<\/a>\u00a0minor, Stephen Turner will create series of animated educational videos about being an adult with autism called \u201cMy Life as Neurodivergent.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have always wanted to tell a story, and Furman has only encouraged that drive in me through the wonderful writing classes from the\u00a0English department<\/a>,\u201d Turner said. \u201cNot only have those classes taught me the ins and outs of unity, style and revision, but they have also shown me the importance of looking inward for your story, either for nonfiction storytelling or for educational content.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
