More than 400 first-year students and their families made their way onto campus Thursday morning, but before the bustle of move-in day, Amelia Hatley \u201925 was feeling emotional.<\/p>\n

As one of the orientation leaders helping the new students get settled into Lakeview Hall, Hatley said the excitement on the faces of the incoming students reminded her of her own orientation three years ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cFurman is such a tight community,\u201d she said. \u201cYour time here can be priceless.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carter Roelofs \u201928 visited Furman once before deciding he\u2019d become a Paladin. His parents were excited for the opportunities Carter will have at Furman, and the Paladin Football team was on hand to help them and other families unload their vehicles and move in.<\/p>\n

At Blackwell Hall, professor and Chair of Business and Accounting Sandy Roberson was helping her daughter, Sabe Roberson \u201928, move in. With 25 years as an educator at Furman, Roberson said Thursday\u2019s move-in put the university in a new light.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m pretty emotional right now \u2013 we came in and saw the welcome home sign, and we had to stop and take a picture,\u201d she said. \u201cSabe loves to learn about lots of different things, so this is the perfect place for her. \u201d<\/p>\n

On Lakeview\u2019s fourth floor, RA Woody Greene \u201826 and First Year Advisor Diego Hernandez \u201927 greeted new students, handing out keys and nametags and answering questions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just get so excited meeting people and building these relationships,\u201d Greene said.<\/p>\n

The wide staircase of the newly renovated Lakeview Hall<\/a> gave people all the room they needed to bring furniture and boxes upstairs to the dorms. The $27.6 million renovation expanded Lakeview to 210 beds, with pod-style bathrooms, ADA-compliant rooms, large windows that offer a view of Furman Lake and common spaces that encourage socializing.<\/p>\n

Blackwell saw 126 students move in, Geer had 96 and Manly had 54.<\/p>\n

Ron Thompson, associate dean of students and director of housing and residence life, said he was excited to see the renovated Lakeview serve its purpose as the living environment for a new class. Thompson said 437 first-year students moved in that day, but early arrivals had been moving in since late July. \u201cWith them comes the optimism of a new year,\u201d he said. \u201cTheir joy for arriving to this special point in their life, a destination they\u2019ve been excited about for some time, is contagious.\u201d<\/p>\n

At Manly Hall, orientation leader Emily Berg \u201925 had a group of student volunteers cheering the first-year students on as they arrived. For the upperclass students, sharing their excitement and passion was a way to make sure the Class of 2028 feel welcome.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it shows them they belong here, and they\u2019re wanted,\u201d Berg said. \u201cYou have a lot of people advocating for you, whether it\u2019s other students, athletes or faculty.\u201d<\/p>\n
