(Dan) Sanders, 84,<\/a> who served three terms as a Furman University trustee from 2010 to 2018. As a trustee he co-chaired the parents committee and served on the advisory council and the executive committee of the Richard Furman Society. He was elected a trustee emeritus in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders, a graduate of the University of South Carolina, began work as an engineer for Exxon in 1962, according to the newspaper. He retired in 2004 as president of ExxonMobil Chemical Company.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Furman community is deeply saddened by the passing of Dan Sanders. Dan was more than a trustee, he was an integral part of the university\u2019s fabric. He was deeply involved and highly engaged in making sure the university could provide the best experience for our students, parents, faculty and staff,\u201d Elizabeth Davis, president of Furman University, told the newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin T. Byrne, chair of the Furman University Board of Trustees, said, \u201cDan was unparalleled as a leader, in that he not only had vision that he could share, but people were ready to fall in and support his efforts. We all benefited from Dan\u2019s participation, and we all feel his loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sanders&#8217; wife, Emilyn Childs Sanders, is a Furman trustee emerita. She served three terms on the board from 1995 to 2008. Dan and Emilyn&#8217;s sons, Dan Jr. and John, are Furman alumni. John graduated in 1988. Dan Jr graduated in 1986; he&#8217;s married to Furman graduate Suzanne Sanders &#8217;88. Their sons and their wives also graduated from Furman; Daniel and Amanda in 2016 and William and Madeline in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legacy.com\/us\/obituaries\/name\/daniel-sanders-obituary?id=55796940\">an obituary<\/a>, a service will be held Aug. 10, 11 a.m., at Westminster Presbyterian Church.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders requested that memorials be made to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/giving\/contact-gift-officer\/\">Furman University<\/a> or to the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sanders served three terms as a Furman University trustee.
