Dr. Elizabeth Davis was interviewed on the “Your Day” radio program.<\/p><\/div>\n

Furman University president Elizabeth Davis spoke about her hopes for higher education in general and Furman in particular during a 15-minute interview on the \u201cYour Day\u201d radio program Monday, Oct. 6.\u00a0 The interview was part of a one-hour program that aired statewide on the South Carolina ETV Radio network from noon to 1 p.m.<\/p>\n

The interview with Dr. Davis was conducted by Angela Halfacre, Professor of Political Science and Earth and Environmental Sciences at Furman and director of the university\u2019s Shi Center for Sustainability.<\/p>\n

During the interview, Davis talked about the importance of students living on campus and participating fully in the life of the university community.\u00a0 And that is especially important at a school like Furman, she said, where nearly 100 percent of the students reside on campus.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the most important aspects of living in residence is the opportunity it affords students to develop a sense of community and shared purpose, even with people with whom they disagree,\u201d Davis said.\u00a0 \u201cWe believe it\u2019s part of our educational mission to foster the skills of understanding, collaboration and empathy so that our students will be able to thrive in a complex and rapidly changing world.\u00a0 If they don\u2019t practice those skills here in a safe environment with faculty and staff supporting them, they won\u2019t be prepared when they are faced with conflicts or competing priorities on the job or in the community in which they live.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cYour Day\u201d program is produced by Clemson Broadcast Productions and is broadcast statewide on South Carolina ETV Radio from noon to 1 p.m., Monday through Thursday.<\/p>\n

Davis became Furman\u2019s 12th President on July 1.\u00a0 She came to Furman from Baylor University in Texas, where she was Executive Vice President and Provost.<\/p>\n

Her other administrative roles over a 22-year career at Baylor included serving as Vice Provost for Financial and Academic Administration, and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Business Programs.\u00a0 As an accounting professor, she received the Hankamer School of Business Teaching Excellence Award and the Mortar Board Circle of Achievement Award.<\/p>\n

Davis received her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Baylor in 1984 and earned her Ph.D. from Duke University in 1992.<\/p>\n
