By most accounts, the U.S. economy is doing better and is well on the way to recovery from the 2008 financial crisis.\u00a0 But many financial experts also agree that things could be better.<\/p>\n
Furman business professor Tom Smythe will look at the current economic situation in America and what the future might hold when he speaks at the university\u2019s High Noon fall lecture series Wednesday, Oct. 8 at the Upcountry History Museum-Furman.<\/p>\n
His lecture\u2014\u201cIf the Financial Markets Could Speak, What Would They Be Saying?\u201d\u2014begins at noon.<\/p>\n
Smythe says the U.S. economy still faces four significant impediments\u2014the unsolved national debt, the looming financial demise of Social Security, the overwhelming evidence indicating U.S. companies are disinvesting, and the likely disintermediation by banks resulting from the 2010 Dodd Frank Act.\u00a0 If the markets could talk, he\u2019ll reveal what they might be saying.<\/p>\n
Smythe\u2019s talk is the third of eight consecutive lectures presented by Furman professors during the fall.\u00a0 All lectures are free and begin at noon on Wednesdays.<\/p>\n
