This year a record 689 students have signed up to participate in the 16th<\/sup> annual Furman Engaged to share their work and experiences from research, internships, study away, capstone projects, musical performances and many other types of experiences with their peers, faculty, staff and the community.<\/p>\n

The event happens Friday, April 12, with 724 presentations on topics ranging from chemistry to music, with titles including “Piano Music of Bohemia,” “The Real Political World in ‘Battlestar Galactica’,” “Sociological Analyses of Belonging, Friendships and Safety,” “Cogs in Wheels Matter: Performing Unheralded Work that Advances the Common Good,” and “Exploring Race, Gender and Language through Anthropological Case Studies.” See the complete schedule at the Furman Engaged website.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cFurman Engaged is such a wonderful event because it allows our students to shine and it allows the rest of us to watch them doing so,\u201d said Erik Ching, the interim associate provost for engaged learning, the Walter Kenneth Mattison Professor of History and the director of Undergraduate Research. \u201cIt\u2019s an especially valuable opportunity for our younger students to see what kinds of experiences exist at Furman for them to consider for their own pathway.\u201d<\/p>\n

A number of other events that give alumni, parents and friends opportunities to experience Furman will be happening alongside Furman Engaged in what is now called \u201cSpring Weekend.\u201d \u00a0These begin Thursday morning with a men\u2019s and women\u2019s soccer match to raise money for Down\u2019s syndrome and the Paladin Pitch<\/a> competition sponsored by the Hill Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Friday is dedicated to Furman Engaged. Classes are cancelled and all the buildings on campus are devoted to student presentations and performances. The International Food Festival returns this year during lunch in the Dining Hall. Poster sessions have moved to the Trone Student Center and Hartness Pavilion this year to accommodate the renovations to Timmons Arena. A celebration of the day will take place outside, between Furman Lake and the DH, starting at 5:30. The FUSAB and SGA spring concert wraps up the day at the amphitheater.<\/p>\n

Saturday sees an unveiling of the Benefactors Green beside the James B. Duke Library, followed by Showcase sessions presented by faculty. There will be lunch, then a ground-breaking ceremony for the Timmons Arena renovation on Saturday afternoon. Visit the Spring Weekend website<\/a> for a complete schedule.<\/p>\n
