--smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/375;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28945\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lauren Fryer Tucker \u201905 (left) led a tour of\u00a0Shepherd Center, a spinal cord and brain injury rehab hospital, during a Paladin Career Trek in November 2023.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/career-services\/career-treks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Paladin Career Treks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> offer the opportunity for students to visit employers and engage in career exploration and professional development,\u201d said Jennifer Stoner, assistant director of employer engagement at the Malone Center. \u201cWe feel that giving students the opportunity to experience different work environments and hear directly from employers about career paths and how to be a strong candidate provides invaluable perspective as they determine their paths after Furman.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Atlanta trek began in the morning with a visit to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/index.htm\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> (CDC), led by Carmen Ashley \u201996, chief of the Program Development and Services Branch within the Division of Adolescent and School Health and a former Furman biology major.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The CDC tour was especially informative for Botamina Sorial \u201924, a health sciences major from Greenville, South Carolina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cCarmen was very approachable,\u201d said the senior. \u201cShe talked to us frankly and humanized her role at the CDC, especially coming out of the pandemic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28946\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28946\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28946 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2023\/11\/career-trek-insert-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"375\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2023\/11\/career-trek-insert-2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2023\/11\/career-trek-insert-2-120x150.jpg 120w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/375;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28946\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carmen Ashley \u201996 (center), chief of the Program Development and Services Branch within the Division of Adolescent and School Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, speaks with students during a Paladin Career Trek to Atlanta, Georgia, in November 2023.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The insight Ashley gave into the bureaucratic workings of the CDC helped Sorial, who hopes to work with nonprofits or grassroots organizations, reflect on different approaches to public health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt was nice to have a better understanding,\u201d she said. \u201cIt confirmed that it might not be something that I want to do full-time, but it\u2019s something that I want to experience as a graduate student to understand what goes behind that decision-making that directly impacts those communities that I do want to work with.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lauren Fryer Tucker \u201905, a senior manager at Shepherd Foundation, led the group through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shepherd.org\/\">Shepherd Center<\/a>, a spinal cord and brain injury rehab hospital.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After a lunch panel and reception at Emory University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nursing.emory.edu\/\">Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing<\/a> and a tour of the Emory campus, breakout tour groups explored the nursing school, the <a href=\"https:\/\/med.emory.edu\/\">Emory School of Medicine<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/sph.emory.edu\/\">Rollins School of Public Health<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As it turned out, that afternoon part of the Career Trek was also of particular interest to Sorial, who plans to eventually pursue a Ph.D. in public health and is currently applying to several masters in public health programs \u2013 including one offered by the Rollins School.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe talked to students and admissions officers, and they were really approachable,\u201d Sorial said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Overall, the Career Trek was \u201ca really positive experience,\u201d said Sorial. \u201cIt fit what I was looking for perfectly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Malone Center regularly offers a number of Career Treks that might be a perfect fit for students interested in a variety of fields, said Stoner.
