The SoCon Undergraduate Research Forum (SURF), held Oct. 13 and 14 at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, featured oral and poster presentations by more than 80 students from six Southeastern states.<\/p>\n<p>Catherine Davis \u201924 and Abby Stapleton \u201924 gave oral presentations at the forum, and Chadwick Frost \u201924 and Kaisa Menkhaus \u201924 displayed research posters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSURF is a great opportunity for Furman students to present the findings of the research or creative activities in a public, professional setting,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/erik-ching\/\">Erik Ching<\/a>, the interim associate provost for engaged learning and the Walter Kenneth Mattison Professor of History.<\/p>\n<p>Entrance into the forum is competitive, said Ching, the director of Furman\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/undergraduate-research\/\">undergraduate research program<\/a>, however, \u201cit is a student-friendly setting in which Furman\u2019s students can share their work with counterparts throughout the Southern Conference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Such experiences align with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/furman-advantage\">The Furman Advantage<\/a>, an educational framework that provides every student an individualized educational pathway and opportunities for high-impact learning experiences, Ching said. In addition to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/furman-engaged\/\">Furman Engaged<\/a>, an annual campus-wide celebration of engaged learning, students are encouraged to seek off-campus opportunities to present their work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA key aspect of any\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/center-engaged-learning\/\">high-impact experience<\/a>\u00a0is a public presentation of one\u2019s research findings or creative production,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Furman\u2019s reputation for fostering research is reflected by significant funding in recent years from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2021\/07\/30\/furman-ranks-third-in-south-carolina-in-nsf-funding\/\">National Science Foundation<\/a>. Working with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/erin-j-wamsley\/\">Erin Wamsley<\/a>, an associate professor of psychology, in Furman\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.furmansleeplab.com\/\">Sleep Lab<\/a>, Frost investigated what subjects dreamed about as they napped right after being asked to recall a time in their lives when they were extremely angry or upset.<\/p>\n<p>Frost, who is also a Bell Tower Scholarship recipient, is still collecting the data on the research he began this past summer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I took a look at the data, it seems that people who have dreams related to their negative experience actually rate the emotion of the dream as positive,\u201d said Frost, who plans to pursue a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and conduct research in psychopathology or brain imaging. \u201cIt\u2019s actually a theory in dream research that dreams sort of strip the emotion from negative experiences that we have.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28623\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28623\" class=\"wp-image-28623 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2023\/10\/AbbyStapleton-768x512-crop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"210\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2023\/10\/AbbyStapleton-768x512-crop.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2023\/10\/AbbyStapleton-768x512-crop-107x150.jpg 107w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 150px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 150\/210;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28623\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abby Stapleton \u201924<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Stapleton, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/chemistry\/\">chemistry<\/a>\u00a0major with a minor in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/majors-minors-programs\/data-analytics-minor\/\">data analytics<\/a>, gave an oral presentation on the biochemistry research she conducted with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/meghan-breen\/\">Meghan Breen<\/a>, an assistant professor of chemistry, investigating why a particular pathogenic yeast species has proven to be so resistant to the frontline treatment fluconazole.<\/p>\n<p>The yeast in question \u201cis especially lethal in bloodstream infections, and we\u2019re concerned that it\u2019s highly prevalent within at-risk populations, with a mortality rate of up to 50%,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Stapleton, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/financial-aid\/aid-types\/merit-based-scholarships\/\">Townes Scholar<\/a>, has been working on her research since May 2022.
