And even though there were models showing off outfits as they strode down a red-carpeted runway, a recent event in Hartness Pavilion was hardly an ordinary fashion show.<\/p>\n<p>The student models in the \u201cWhat\u2019s in Your Closet?\u201d career fashion show mostly wore clothes out of their own closets. Some of the outfits were chosen, in consultation with the experts at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/career-services\/\">Malone Center for Career Engagement<\/a>, as good examples of how to dress for a job interview or in a business casual office setting. The pale silk blouse, brown pants and pale heels worn by Emily Berg \u201925 constituted \u201ca business casual outfit that is perfect for the professional world,\u201d Tyszka said. Victor Betaille \u201927 modeled a dress shirt, tie and black jacket, ideal for a job interview or networking with potential employers and alumni in a new city on a Paladin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2023\/05\/18\/paladins-have-capitol-time-during-career-trek\/\">Career Trek<\/a>, the emcee said. Other models provided more bad examples: An ensemble sported by Lo Vodo \u201925 \u2013 sweatshirt, plaid pajama pants and Crocs \u2013 while certainly comfortable, would \u201cnot be the best for that job interview,\u201d said Tyzska, nor would the novelty beer-themed T-shirt, cartoon-patterned sweatpants and sandals worn by Tate Denham \u201926.<\/p>\n<p>The career fashion show was a first for Furman, said Madi Ogburn, assistant director of communications and assessment for the Malone Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we observed the Career Fair over the years, we noticed that the students don\u2019t always know that you don\u2019t have to dress full business formal,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s snappy casual, there\u2019s business casual \u2013 it runs the whole gamut of what you can wear and varies by professional fields, as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s in Your Closet?\u201d was student-focused from the outset, said Ogburn, as the student career ambassadors recruited their friends across campus to model their own clothes as well as scripting the event themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The goal was \u201cto make it fun and encourage students to laugh while learning more about professional development,\u201d said Tyszka, who got a chance to walk the runway herself, joining co-emcee Roger Abim-Karmon \u201926 in modeling their career ambassador fit \u2013 purple Malone Center polos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best advice that I have is just wearing something that I\u2019m confident in, and then I feel professional,\u201d said Tyszka, who has already ventured into the professional world as a writing and publishing consultant. \u201cI always dress up, never down, because I feel like you can never be overdressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And when all else fails, said Ogburn, you can\u2019t go wrong if there\u2019s a basic black suit in your own closet.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the lead-up to the Career and Internship Fair, the Malone Center for Career Engagement presented \u201cWhat\u2019s in Your Closet?\u201d to inspire job-seekers to dress professionally and confidently.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":265,"featured_media":27829,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[63,87,30],"tags":[2311,2310],"class_list":["post-27828","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-career-services","category-malone-center-for-career-engagement","category-top-stories","tag-career-and-internship-fair","tag-career-week"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/27828","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/265"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=27828"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/27828\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/27829"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=27828"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=27828"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=27828"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
