{"id":2735,"date":"2013-10-21T14:21:08","date_gmt":"2013-10-21T18:21:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2013\/10\/21\/furman-to-host-chinese-culture-night-2\/"},"modified":"2022-11-07T19:57:00","modified_gmt":"2022-11-08T00:57:00","slug":"furman-to-host-chinese-culture-night-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/furman-to-host-chinese-culture-night-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Furman hosts Chinese Culture Night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Furman will host a night of Chinese opera with internationally renowned bass-baritone Sun Yu at 7 p.m., Tuesday, October 29 at the Younts Conference Center.<\/p>\n<p>Sun Yu, accompanied by pianist Dewitt Tipton, will present three Chinese songs, \u201cHomesickness,\u201d \u201cOn the Jialing River\u201d and \u201cYada Meyiren,\u201d an inner-Mongolian folk song, as well as two opera arias by Gioachino Rossini and Sergei Rachmaninoff.\u00a0 Furman students learning Chinese will recite the lyrics in Chinese, while members of the Chinese Student Association will recite lyrics in English.<\/p>\n<p>A native of Shanghai, Sun Yu is an award-winning singer who has performed lead operatic roles on many of the world\u2019s top stages. Trained at the China Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, his credits include roles in Wagner\u2019s \u201cParsifal,\u201d Verdi\u2019s \u201cLa Traviata,\u201d Mozart\u2019s \u201cDon Giovanni,\u201d Bizet\u2019s \u201cCarmen,\u201d Puccini\u2019s \u201cMadam Butterfly\u201d and Jing Shang\u2019s \u201cSavage Land.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese Culture Night event, part of the university\u2019s Cultural Life Program, is sponsored by the Department of Asian Studies and the Chinese Student Association. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., followed by the performance from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
