Nelsen, a politics and international affairs professor, said Trump&#8217;s lead in the polls suggests he has nothing to gain by participating. Dougherty also asked Nelsen about how candidates can stand out in a short amount of time. Nelsen said a debate &#8220;presents opportunities for failure as well as for success.&#8221; A pithy statement, coming across as someone who is forceful but not overly forceful, and no &#8220;brain freeze&#8221; moments are critical for a solid debate outcome, he said.
